Sometimes, a break from the typical and/or expected is necessary. Enter: UNITED POWER SOUL. The sax (and the general groove) reminds me of late '00s Jessie Evans and I can't shake CAMEO comparisons, but these Canadian kids deliver classic '80s funk/R'nB with an indescribably addictive individuality. Sure, "Dirty Compliments" comes off like a lounge act covering some unheralded track off of Uplift Mofo Party Plan, but when that dude drops a sultry growl and says "I wanna take a shower with you" and starts talking about "freaky activity" I am all the fukk in. Pure, unabashed and shameless...sold.
