A perfect assemblage of early '00s DIY hardcore and crust focused on USA (A.O.S., DISSYSTEMA) and Sweden (CROSSING CHAOS, AVSKUM, DISKONTO, PROJECT HOPELESS) with SICK TERROR (Brasil), DISBEER (Austria) and RECHARGE (Germany) filling in the gaps. A strong tip of the hat to Indonesia's Hardcore Curse Records for not only putting this compilation together, but for including a couple of shit-fi tracks from countrymen DICKHEAD so all of the punks know wheat belongs where....and DICKHEAD absolutely belong sandwiched between AVSKUM and DISKONTO even if (especially if?) their tracks sound like absolute shit.

Playing with DISCARGA in Brazil was something else. We spent a week with them in 2002 and they laid waste to everything. Every night. I posted this demo in 2014 but I've been blasting a lot of early '00s fastcore lately and DISCARGA just keeps coming up...because they were awesome. That's all.

Twenty six blasts of raw Brasilian hardcore circa mid 2000s. You shouldn't need much more than that, so I'll list a few of the bands: ABUSO SONORO, NAUZO, ANTICORPUS, ESTILACOS DE ODIO, SOBREVIVIENTES, SEPTICIMIA, ROT, DEADMOCRACY, SEM ACORDO, EXECRADORES.....sure, there are more. So just download the shit and start screaming, because life after CONSTRASTE BIZARRO is far better than life before CONTRASTE BIZARRO. Trust me.

Thrashers - REJOICE!!! If you don't already know how fucking huge crossover thrash is in Brasil, then you might as well start here before making your way over to VIOLATOR, DAMN YOUTH, MACE, and...well, you should pack yourself a snack because you're going to be thrashing for a while. Long running veterans D.F.C. lay down a full throttle Bonded By Blood style madness, while NUNCHAKU MASTERS are a little more deliberate and lean more on the crossover/hardcore end of the spectrum (as opposed to the metal/thrash end...). I've used too many words already, just get to work.

VISÃO SOCIAL

Rough and determined Brasilian hardcore, circa 1999. There's a healthy dose of NYHC imposing its will at times, but if you listen to how those parts are tempered by out of tune guitars and general sonic adolescence (specifically in "MMM"), it takes some of the sting out.

And while I'm selling you on turn of the century DIY hardcore from Brasil, I should mention that I re-ripped the RIDE 4 A FALL demo a while ago, replacing the butchered files that I initially shared. Killer late '90s Per Koro meets North American DIY anarcho mosh metal (yes, i just made that up, but I'm guessing you know exactly what I mean). Mr. Gatewood would approve....

MASSACRE DIVINE

Relentless metallic DISCHARGE worship from Brasil's MASSACRE DIVINE - featuring Fofåo of BESTHOVEN fame on drums. In eight short minutes they make it clear that nothing short of strict adherence to the form will suffice...and they deliver as expected.

This fukkr is even more deadly in hindsight as I go back to listen.....there's something eternally refreshing about bands who just GO! with no apologies. There version of a breakdown is the weird quiet blast beat at the end of "Neutrinos," and the riffs throughout will make you cock your head to the side like "what did I just hear?" the same way that a lot of us felt the first time the German metalcore of the same era fell into our ears. The ARMAGEDDOM cover is a nice touch for context, even though most of the writing here is over-steeped in the best parts of '90s DIY hc/grind. There are only four tracks here, but I recommend everything that you can get your hands on.

PRESTO?

This thing....ooooofffff, I swear you don't find 'em like this very often. São Paulo's PRESTO? are utterly mindblowing, with 21 songs clocking in just over 17 minutes, and they still have time to throw in flares like the face melting lurching blasts in "Auto Ajuda" that make up what is one of the most intense segments of a hc/grind song ever. Ever. Yeah, I said that. Released in 2001 at the height of fastcore, Odio Pure Concentrado is quite simply head and shoulders above vurtually all of their contemporaries - from the metallic riffing in "Correna" (and ugh that breakdown - are you kidding me?!) to the devastating and ominous opening 40 seconds of "Progresso Accelerado," it's literally everything I want from this style of hardcore. It doesn't just hold up after all these years, this one still sets the fukkn bar.  

ODIO PURO CONCENTRADO

SEM HASTRO

Hastily recorded, shoddily duplicated (in the van while on tour, no less), and sloppily presented, this demo has all of the hallmarks of a total throwaway....except that it fukkn rules. This São Paulo/Washington DC project burst to life in 2016 and embarked on a substantial North American tour with THE PESSIMISTS....my face was melted at the Oakland gig, and this three song demo is all that I have to show for it. I bought a single too, but I was drunk. It happens. This tape is supposed to have five songs I think, but mayhaps they should have let the edge dude/s in the band and on the tour be in charge of duplication because my copy only has the three (now that I listen, I might have edited poorly, and there might actually be four...oops). And they are all screamers. Ripping, snotty, open throttle hardcore punk with vocals that have a noteworthy ferocity. Real Talk: "Pesadelos" is the bangingest track you will hear today. Dudes from COKE BUST, LOTUS FUCKER, CANKRO and loads more, in case that shit matters. It should. Get amongst it. 

RANCOR A CIDADE

FINAL SLUM WAR

This used to be Mondays at TEHQ. We were nearing the end of the aughts, ramshackle raw DBeat was king, and every Monday there was a different tasty shell to be found at this virtual address. Times change, people move on, scenes evolve....but it's always a good idea to keep an eye (and ear) to the past. The past teaches lessons, and the past serves as a reminder - sometimes to emulate and sometimes to avoid. In the case of Brasil's FINAL SLUM WAR, however, the past is the present. And the past fucking rips hard. Six minutes of blistering raw DISCLOSE worship (to be fair, BESTHÖVEN worship is probably more accurate) spread out over five tracks. Recorded in 2013 and released last year, this one makes me want to dust off my KRÜEL demos.

It seems weird that today, more than eight years into this weird cultural experiment, marks the first appearance of BESTHÖVEN. Hailing from the relatively nowhere town of Gama, somewhere between the coast and the interior regions of Brasil, this one man/machine project is to South America what Kawakami is to Japan. With 50+ releases under his belt, Fofäo has been cranking out sinister and primitive DBeat for well over 20 years with no signs of slowing down. The live experience includes various other players, but the recordings are (primarily) just one dude, DBeating his life away for our pleasure. This tape features BESTHÖVEN tracks from splits with VIOLATION, SKELETON, TRIOXIN 245, SEE/GET, WARVICTIMS, SUBURBAN SHOWDOWN and DISCLOSE, as well as the More Victims Of War and Just Another War Song EPs. Raw and brutal Dbeat purism...

Maybe it's because I just got back from Brasil, maybe it's because the comp is just hot like fukkn fire, or maybe it's because Ben started cranking out the regional Pandemonium mix tape series a few years back and I have yet to share them with you. But you shouldn't wonder why you are getting this gift, you should just lather yourself in the pure primal power that is '80s Brasilian punk and hardcore. COLERA, OLHO SECO, LOBOTOMIA, RATOS DE PORÃO....sure. but also AUSCHWITZ, HINO MORTAL, FOGO CRUZADO, COBAIAS, GRINDERS and so many more. 29 tracks in all, every one essential.

Filthy '90s Brasilian grind/crust. Ripping fasts, searing blasts, multiple vocals and pure raw attack. Choice banger: "Gasolina," if only because when they scream the word it sounds like a very real threat.

CIBORGUE

Absolute outsider punk. You know you're in for it while the three minute title track slogs endlessly forward, but nothing can prepare you for the shit-fi noise core that follows. Neurose Digital makes the VACCUUM Space-Fi tape seem sonically imposing, this is the thinnest and weirdest sounding cassette on my shelves (or in my boxes, for that matter). But it's not just blundering....it's actually and actively weird, almost as if there is a collective vision at work here, and this is what sets CIBORGUE apart. Apart from what, exactly? Well, I'm still not sure...but can you imagine watching this shit live?!? I need to go back to Brasil.

O.V.E.C.

Criminally limited reissue of O.V.E.C.'s 1989 demo from our friends at Outprint. Raw and furious hardcore punk that rips through six tracks in seven minutes, including the 0:20 title track. The band hisses with intensity as much as the tape itself hisses with infidelity, these tracks are pure screamers. Number one banger: "Sem Proteção."

I hope that at least some of you visit Terminal Escape for the shit you've never heard before...right? This tape comes from Curitiba, the capital city of Pararná, sometime in the '90s (I'm assuming). Heavy US hardcore influence, up front political lyrics (translations included in the .zip file so you can learn more things) and unhinged fast parts. Top banger: "On Your Knees."

Raw HC/grind lacking anything approaching on the high side of fidelity. The blasts fall apart, there is no low end, the riffs are indiscernible...it's basically a complete racket. These are the sounds that people who dig "extreme" things will listen to and just go...."what?" because these Brasilians were out there. And they did not give a shit. So if you want chaos and mania (and, of course, riffs - because DUÄS NÓTÄ got riffs), look no further than this 2001 demo. As always, you're welcome.

That box of tapes I got from Brasil last year just keeps on delivering. Chaotic and high energy early '00s fastcore/crust from São Paulo with a singer that is even more off the rails than the frenetic drummer. Seven songs in a hair under ten minutes - shouts, screams, blasts and moshes...pretty much all of the things you need.

I posted the 1999 demo from these São Paulo heavyweights last year, and now here's the bomb that dropped the year before. Fierce mid tempo mosh, crew backing vox that sound like an actual testosterone dogpile, this shit makes me revert back to the adolescent that I never was...and when they lurch forward with the uptempo sections of "Mídia" or "Respieto" I feel like even the casual listener should lose their marbles. CONSTRITO appeals on a very base level, and maybe you take a peek over your shoulder before blasting this in 2015 (there are cool kids lurking everywhere!), but once you get the shit into your earholes? Fukk it man, cool kids need to learn.

INFECT

I consider myself pretty lucky to have seen many of my favorite bands over the years. I don't count missing out on bands that hung up their hats before I knew what punk was, but I've crossed paths with most of the bands that have really kicked my ass since I started listening to DIY punk...which is obviously one of the best things about this scene and the bands in it. In 2002 when WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? went to Brasil, São Paulo's INFECT and DISCARGA were probably the band I was most excited to see, and we were touring with DISCARGA so that one was easy. We played just one show with INFECT (a scab lineup with the bass player singing and Pedro playing guitar, if my memory is correct) and the energy was fukkn great. Things I remember about that show include: me wearing shorts (a rarity even then), Mozine drunk on wine (not really that rare), and a balcony surrounding the stage that was jammed with kids. INFECT were all female straight edge thrash, but beyond whatever niche appeal that garnered, they fukkn ripped. I strongly recommend the vinyl discography to all interested parties, and offer thins 1999 demo in the meantime.
