LV⅃ 96/97

The sounds reflect the times on this 1997 compilation, with doses of rap metal and metalcore peppering a group of Mexican bands primarily from Guadalajara. After opening with a turntable drenched offering from ZONA 13, LV⅃ 96/97 moves on to industrial metal (MOTOR, DESARMADOR, LODO), high energy metalcore/thrash (SILENCIO, CONDUCTA ANIMAL), catchy punk (STAMINA, GARIGOLES) commercial rap metal (REVERZA MAZORZA, DEAD SILENCE). The HARM track is compelling, possibly because the recording is blown to complete shit, ISOBEL essentially deliver a massive guitar solo disguised as technical metalcore, and LINEA round things out with a criminally lo-fi dose of barked vocals and deadly riffing. The STAMINA and CONDUCTA ANIMAL tracks are my favorites, but it's no secret in these pages that I'm a huge proponent of "time and place" collections. The first show I played in Mexico was in the border town of Nogales in 1996, and I feel like any of these bands could have been on the bill (there were a LOT of bands...and one four channel PA amp that powered guitar, bass and vocals)...and those memories probably influence my listening. This is not a bad thing...not at all.
