THE VON STEINS // JOE & THE CHICKENHEADS

I picked up THE VON STEINS split with FOUR LETTER WORDS a long time ago, grabbed it purely on a whim just to see what it was like. "Say What" is a pretty good track, but "Hot Sex" closes out their side and it instantly became a bedrock song in my arsenal - a go-to that I still jam on the regular today. I'm sure the FOUR LETTER WORDS side is pretty cool, and I assume I must have listened to it at some point......but "Hot Sex" is pretty much a game changer. There's one other 45 that I've come across, "Hot Sex" b/w some other track that is probably pretty good but...well, "Hot Sex" is pretty much a game changer. Enter this cassette; while there's no "Hot Sex" to be found, I was eager to add more analog synth driven southern California cold punk tracks to my grey matter. Timeless cuts, brilliant robotic slam jams like "Get A Rabies Shot" and "Girls Get Crazy" are killers, though the opener "Scratch My Love Itch" is the only one that compares to "Hot Sex." Once again, there's a band on the other side: JOE & THE CHICKENHEADS. Wild thrashing speed metal with a full ska horn section and a....chicken theme? Oh wait, there's a RANCID cover with Diet Coke lyrics, and now I'm teetering between confused and annoyed. So I suggest going to go back to THE VON STEINS, and after you've listened to "Chocolate" and "Twisted Monkey" to round out their side, track down one of those vinyl slabs with "Hot Sex" on it...you've got two to choose from.
