DEVIATED INSTINCT

I posted the Tip Of The Iceberg demo from DEVIATED INSTINCT a few months back, and Slaughter Of Innocents  gave us their early 4 track recordings back in December, so here is the 1985 demo that (perhaps) came between those two recordings.  Many of the same songs from the more primitive early demo (and several also appear on Tip Of The Iceberg as well), but slightly more polished recordings, though these tracks are still raw as hell and brilliant pissed political UK punk.  I love the short blasts of "Eat The Rich" contrasted with vocal only bits like "War" and the longer plodding songs that I almost called proto-crust, but then I stopped myself because that is a ridiculously pretentious descriptor...even though it's pretty appropriate.  DEVIATED INSTINCT material has been floating around for ages, from the tape traders in the 80s to the countless uploads in internetland, but I haven't yet come across this recording (I know it's out there...it's all out there) and, more importantly, they were way ahead of their time and the shit just rules. DEVIATED INSTINCT

A twelve song live set that was recorded a month before the 1985 demo I posted back in February. No introduction or explanation really required, DEVIATED INSTINCT were fucking ace. In late 1985, Mid says the band was "still very much finding our feet," but this live set sounds like anything but a band finding their footing. If there were a designated genre for Filthy Anarcho Crust, then I would put DEVIATED INSTINCT at the top of the tree...I'm looking forward to seeing them in September.

DEVIATED INSTINCT

I'm sure this demo (and their other recordings) are readily available online, and questions you might have about the band can be answered here, as the band is playing shows again as of 2007. This 1986 demo came between the Welcome To The Orgy EP and 1988's Rock n' Roll Conformity full length, and is a much more anarcho punk approach to the stenchcore/crust that they would become famous for. While the later LPs strayed a little too far away from punk for may taste, DEVIATED INSTINCT took the torch borne by AMEBIX and marched with it proudly until they split in 1991. Members continued on in SPINE WRENCH, who took the weird parts of DEVIATED INSTINCT and ran with them, and BAIT. Guitarist Mid is a pretty well known artist as well, especially with the crusters...but you must know all of this already, yes? For such a well known and revered band, I'm kinda surprised that these songs haven't been put to wax (at least I haven't found it if they have), and in case you haven't come across them elsewhere here they are.

DEVIATED INSTINCT

Four killer tracks tacked onto the end of a live set from 1985 (posted here). DEVIATED INSTINCT should need no introduction, but the uninitiated should prepare themselves for some raw and primitive UK anarcho crust. Two studio burners, followed by two live (or perhaps rehearsal?) tracks. Maybe this is for purists and/or completists, but maybe it just rules.

Скверна, the first release from Russian stench mongers FATUM, is well over a decade old now, but it'll still spread tension throughout your entire being. Formed in the DEVIATED INSTINCT (by way of HELLSHOCK) mold, they've created massive waves with a string of LPs (the most recent is a devastating split with DECADE) and the nuclear of all of that crust can be heard here. Maniacal, churning metalcrust of the highest order.

DECLINE

This is some kind of proto-post-neo-crust or some shit, but I think I like it. While a few of the drum beats do indeed scream "1990!!!!!" right in your face, the riffs that DECLINE dish out are solid, and it comes off like the good parts of Thrash Zone era DRI (and don't lie, there are a few good parts, even if only because they make you chuckle) mixed with MORAL SUCKLING or later DEVIATED INSTINCT. Favorite song here is "Fools," it sounds like AMEBIX playing late 80s era Bay Area thrash metal, but all the tunes manage to pull of a certain charm. Wednesdays are for proto-post-neo-crust from now on....or at least for this week.

More like this please? Thank you. A breathtaking collection of raw fastcore, mince/grind, noise, shit-fi and punk, all delivered with a brilliantly honest lack of fidelity. DESTRUCT, PROJECT BABI NO.9, DEVIATED SYMPHONY, DIRTY MOUTH, NOISE FOR VIOLENCE and more, all hailing from Yogyjakarta. Shit just feels real, and the next 42 minutes of your life are about to get a lot more brutal.

I realize that this might be a tough sell for a lot of folks who stop by The Escape, but I assure you that if you take the leap, you will be rewarded with wonderful tunes. This tape came to me courtesy of Terminal Escape visitors (like yourself) who also happen to be friends, and it falls well outside of the rather narrow musical parameters that I have set up here (though that was not my intent at the outset - it just kinda happened that way because I'm into punk) but GUIGNOL & MISCHIEF BREW define their own parameters on this release, so preconceptions be damned. Fight Dirty is a fucking party on wheels - equal parts Old West soundtrack, Gypsy fireside brawls, Eastern European horn ensemble, THE POGUES on steroids and a smattering of THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS...it exists on a whole different plane, and that plane is way more fun than the one we are currently spending our time on.

Also - I saw DEVIATED INSTINCT Saturday night and was pretty floored. Only stayed for a few songs since I'm a grown up and have to get up early to go to work (which doesn't necessarily make me an adult...it might make me working class, or perhaps just an idiot, the jury is still out) but I STRONGLY encourage punks on the West Coast to go see these fools - shit was amazing. Sunday in San Francisco, hopefully I'll stay for the whole thing!

It occurs to me often that I should spend some time re-posting old demos and fixing dead links, but I'll be fukkd sideways if there isn't a constant stream of new and/or worthwhile shit to share. But this shit is mandatory, so here it is again: Tip Of The Iceberg got the treatment here in 2009, and the words still ring true...though I swear I don't remember such a challenge editing the tracks last time around. This band forms a crucial bridge between early '80s anarcho-punk and late '80s metal/crust, but this 1986 demo is essential, regardless of subgenre descriptors. More old stuff to follow (again), after the new shit that I think you need.

ATAVISTIC

 

The two EPs that came in 1987 (the year after this demo was recorded) are under the radar rippers and well worth tracking down (as is the much more thrashing Vanishing Point LP from 1990) - much like the ten tracks on From Within, they are a bombastic blasting assault. It's hard to place ATAVISTIC in the context of the UK anarcho/punk/hardcore/thrash scenes - CIVILISED SOCIETY and HERESY were rolling strong, but also DEVIATED INSTINCT and the tail end of ANTISECT. This demo is a whirlwind - intensity definitely valued over proficiency with blast beats that don't even make sense until you realize that it's just a way to play faster. Then listen to the lead drop in on "Timshel" and that blown out bass intro to "Your Time's Up." Fucking monstrous.

File VIBRATORS along with the scores of starter bands that I never really dug into - and I wonder if the proliferation of access to literally everything means that new/er generations of punk listeners are more (or less) likely to completely skip over the starters. If you can click-click-stream-click your way to CAMERA SILENS and DEEF and COLERA and DEVIATED INSTINCT then maybe you end up skipping over the classics the same way that punk listeners in the '80s may have eschewed LOVERBOY and NIGHT RANGER. Also, maybe that's a shitty analogy, but the point is that VIBRATORS were one of the first, they’ve been consistently cranking out records for 45 years…I don't think I could name you a single song aside from “Automatic Lover.” So when several sessions started popping up on live tapes I've been ripping the past few days I figured maybe it was a sign and I paid attention...not surprisingly, the shit is good. I collected a few of those sessions here:

Like a lot of first wave UK punk the direct connection to bluesy rock 'n roll is front and center, but there's a real nice dark almost psychedelic bent to a few tracks here...but punk listeners already know this. Gonna go click-click-stream-click and crank Pure Mania on my way to work today...and appreciate the fact that I will be listening to punk music for the first time until my last breath.
